Historic Bell Ringing
Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution against tyranny and for liberty and justice for all at 6 p.m. on the steps of First Church in Belfast, United Church of Christ.
On Friday, April 18, churches across the country have been invited to ring their church bells in solidarity with a profound and historic event happening simultaneously at the Lantern Service at Old North Church in Boston. This event marks the 250th anniversary of the “two if by sea” signal that sparked the American Revolution.
We are reminded of that historic call for freedom and justice during this moment in our history that also demands that we step forward for freedom and justice. For the past 200 years, the ringing of our Revere bell has marked our democratic history through the many struggles by which people have sought to defend the Common good.
April 18 is also Good Friday, an important Christian holy day, when we also remember Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion and the ongoing suffering of the marginalized and oppressed in our own world and times.
